Genesis 10-11, Acts 2:1-13 / Bible Notes

”Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”“

Genesis 11:4 NLT

”That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world.“

Genesis 11:9 NLT

As was discussed in the sermon yesterday, disordered humans are evil. In their disorder, they foolishly attempt to mock God’s sovereignty and reign over HIS creation. They mistake and misuse the gifts that God gave them, and instead of giving praise to Him, the attempt to build a tower to monument their OWN strength and greatness. Seeing this, God puts them in their correct place and confuses them and scatters them.

”and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!“

Acts of the Apostles 2:8 NLT

During Pentecost, God uses His control over speech and understanding to bless many nations with Knowledge of His Son and the wonderful work He had done.

Our abilities to communicate and understand are gifts from God. With this in mind and with our understanding of the absolute corruptive hold of sin in the human heart, we must prayerfully orient ourselves to the use of these gifts for God.

The way we speak should honor Him and praise Him. We must speak truthfully and gracefully. When we are speaking or listening, we must use our understanding correctly, we must not speak out of selfish ambition or pride, but instead to build each other up and bring praise to the Lord.
