Job 1, 2 / Bible Notes

”But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!” “All right, you may test him,” the Lord said to Satan. “Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.“

Job 1:11-12 NLT

”He said, “I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!”“

Job 1:21 NLT

Job provides us with an example of how to suffer well. Job recognizes that all that he has comes from God. He fears the Lord and conducts himself accordingly.

This however does not stop him from grieving for what he’s lost, but he does not assign blame unnecessarily. He does not curse God for taking anything away from him and instead offers him praise for what he once had.

”But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.“

Job 2:10 NLT

This verse reminded me of a verse from Ecclesiastes I thought on often in 2023.

”In the day of prosperity be happy, But in the day of adversity consider— God has made the one as well as the other So that man will not discover anything that will be after him.“

Ecclesiastes 7:14 NASB1995

God gives us all we own and gives us every day. There is cause to be thankful and give God praisve in each day, whether it’s events seem good or bad.
